Data Recovery First Aid: 3 Tips To Increase Your Chances Of Success

Let?s get to the important part first ? if you?ve just lost your data, skip past this introduction and go directly to our first tip, so you can start your rescue operation. If not, a few minutes spent now might help you a lot in the future. Pay special attention to our third tip.

I always thought of myself as a reliable guy with reliable data. I never deleted my files accidentally, I made regular backups and had a power supply for my computer to protect me against surges and outages. However last year I experienced two cases of data loss where I needed to use recovery software. The first was a dead hard drive that?d hardly served a year. Subsequently, I accidentally deleted a large project file that was too big for the Recycle Bin. Happily I?ve got all my data back, thanks to good advice and a little preparation.

These handy tips will help you stay confident in the face of data loss, no matter how it occurs.

Tip #1: Use your system as little as possible until you recover all of your lost files. The more activity taking place on your hard disk, the greater the chance that some of your lost data might be written over.

- Don?t copy any files to the disk containing your lost data;
- Avoid browsing the web, because your web browser saves cache files on the disk;
- Don?t launch any unnecessary programs, because they can also use your disk;
- Don?t restart your computer.

Tip #2: Before you go further, take steps to free up some space on the disk containing your lost files. The more free space your system has, the less chance of overwriting any lost files with new ones. You can do one or more of the following things.

- Delete old files that you don?t need anymore (you can also move them to another source, like a USB flash drive, instead of deleting);
- Empty your Recycle Bin ? making sure that you haven?t put any important files in there by mistake;
- Empty your browser cache. For Internet Explorer, click on the ?Tools? menu, then select ?Internet Options?. Then, on the ?General? tab, click the ?Delete Files?? button.

Tip #3: To install any software after data damage increases the risk of your data being overwritten, so if you haven?t had any data problems yet, consider installing a data recovery program just in case. Prevention is always better than cure, and a recovery program is good insurance for your data. However, if you don?t yet have a recovery program, find one and ? if possible ? avoid installing it to the disk where your lost files are located.

Most recovery programs work fairly similarly. You need to select the disk where the lost files are located, let the program analyze the content of the disk ? this can take a while ? and then select the file you want to recover. Then, provide a location where you want to save that file. You should try to avoid recovering files to the same disk. You could use another hard drive, a network or removable media like a floppy disk or USB flash drive.

After you recover your files, check that they are correct. If you?ve recovered applications, check that they still run, or if you?ve recovered documents, check that your words are still there. Even the best recovery software can?t guarantee 100% results. If some parts of your files were overwritten ? meaning that other data was saved to their location on your disk ? after recovery they might contain invalid information. Depending on the type of file involved, partially recovered files like this can be mended by special utilities.

TSA's PreCheck program reveals promise and problems

By Rob Lovitt, NBC News contributor

As both an elite member of Delta?s mileage plan and a participant in the government?s Global Entry program, George Reese could be considered a ?trusted traveler? two times over.

Yet, based on his last two airport experiences, he could be forgiven for thinking the government doesn?t trust him at all. Despite being approved for PreCheck, TSA?s expedited screening program, the Minneapolis-based chief technology officer found himself directed to the regular screening lines, negating the entire point of enrolling in the first place.

And he wasn?t alone. ?There were others, too, and they were obviously miffed at being shunted off to the regular lines,? he told NBC News. ?The reality of the program being random diminishes a lot of the value of it.?

Still, and Reese wholeheartedly agrees, inconsistent access to the program is better than not having a program at all. First announced last fall, PreCheck is still a work in progress but has the potential to fundamentally change the way travelers get through security.

Currently, the program is available at 22 airports?and open to eligible members of the mileage programs of Alaska, American, Delta, United and US Air, along with members of other Trusted Traveler programs, including Global Entry, NEXUS and SENTRI. Once approved, they?re eligible to use special security lanes, where they can keep shoes and jackets on and laptops and 3-1-1 liquids in their bags.

That is, unless they?re denied entry from the PreCheck lane, a situation that appears to be happening to a small percentage of program members. According to TSA, some incidents are due to computer glitches or ID discrepancies but the fact is that, pre-approval notwithstanding, guaranteed access is not part of the program.

?The reason we don?t give access to everyone all the time (is to keep it) random and unpredictable,? said TSA Associate Director Douglas Hofsass. ?If, in fact, we had someone who got into the program with ill intent, we don?t want them to game the system by thinking that they?re going to get expedited screening every time they travel.?

Unfortunately, that also means that members who are no threat at all have no way of knowing whether or not they?ll be able to use the PreCheck lane before they get to the airport.

?The value of it comes when you can plan your day and not have to leave home three hours before your flight,? said Reese.

Frustrations aside, there are signs that the program is working ? social media is full of commentary from people sharing their speedy, hassle-free experiences ? and recent research suggests that expanding the program could improve airport security even further.

The idea, as proposed in a RAND Corp. report released last week, is that greater participation will allow TSA to use fewer resources screening the increasing number of travelers that they already ?know? and reallocate those resources toward those they don?t, i.e., those who haven?t been previously vetted.

?It?s the flipside of negative profiling, which results in a lot of false positives,? said Brian Jackson, director of RAND?s Safety and Justice Program. ?It?s about making tradeoffs in more sophisticated ways.? At the same time, increasing enrollment should eventually remove more people from the general security lanes, which should shorten lines and wait times for non-participants, as well.

And expanding the program is clearly on TSA?s agenda. According to Hofsass, the agency expects to have PreCheck lanes in 35 airports by the end of the year ? the next will be Cincinnati, which will open a lane on Sept. 5 ? and screen its 3 millionth traveler by the middle of next month.

Of course, if more members lead to longer PreCheck lines, more frustration may also be forthcoming, especially for those who are denied access.

?I?d still prefer to get it sometimes than not have it at all,? said Reese. ?But it?d be a heckuva lot more valuable if you could actually count on it.?

Sennheiser launches the Momentum retro-cans and CX890i earbuds

Sennheiser launches the Momentum

Sennheiser is busting out a pair of personal audio products worth boasting about at this year's IFA. First up is the very fashionable Momentum, a pair of chrome and leather cans that take cues from the Amperior reference design, with a 3.5mm stereo lead and optional smart remote. However, if you're in the market for something a little less visible, the company's CX 890i earphones are coated in a "glass-like" finish that offers "outsanding" passive noise attenuation -- sparing you jacking up the volume to avoid your co-workers bickering. Both sets are available in the UK from September, with the Momentum costing £260 and the CX 890i (pictured after the break) a more modest £120.

Survey: 51 percent think 'stormy weather' interferes with online cloud

1 day

Consumers are still a bit hazy on what exactly "the cloud" constitutes when it comes to computers;?51 percent thought inclement weather would interfere with cloud computing, and around the same number claimed never to use it ? and nearly?all of them were wrong.

The survey (PDF), conducted by Wakefield Research for Citrix, suggests that cloud services aren't exactly very well-defined in consumers' minds, even if they use them every day. Of the 54 percent of 1,004 people surveyed who thought they never used the cloud, 95 percent reported doing things like banking online, storing photos on Web services, and using online file-sharing sites.

One in five said they've faked knowing what the cloud is or how it works when they talked about it?during a date or interview, and half said they suspect others are doing the same thing. And that 51 percent who thought storms might mess with the cloud indicates that plenty of people genuinely don't understand it ? unless they were talking about Internet?outages resulting from high winds.

Practically everyone who uses the internet uses cloud-based services in some way or another, whether it's uploading photos to Facebook or searching through old messages in Gmail. So the cloud isn't in danger of losing customers, but those customers just might not know they're using it or even what it is.

Perhaps providers of popular cloud services, like Dropbox and Google, need to make it a little more clear how cloud-oriented they are, both to inform and reassure users who don't understand (and perhaps don't like) the idea.

James van Praagh's Projects on Overcoming Grief over the Years ...

When James van Praagh communicates messages from the grave, he is always so easy-going and natural that one could easily forget that the person who is delivering the message is deceased. However, it is through this natural and seemingly easy conversation that James proves that grief, though universal and powerful, is also survivable.

Van Praagh was born in Bayside New York as the fourth and last child of his Catholic parents. He was brought up in this faith, and he even participated in his church as an altar boy. He studied in the seminary and this is where he gained a deeper insight into the concept of spirituality. He graduated from a public school and went on to university to study Broadcasting and Communication. However, he never knew that he would be broadcasting and communicating in a way that is paranormal. Through his work, a lot of hearts have gained the closure that they needed to heal and move on after the loss of a loved one.

However, apart from medium ship, Van Praagh has participated in various projects over the years. In his twenty five years as a survival evidence medium, he has written a number of inspirational and best-selling books that have helped people to survive heartache and get over loss. He has also helped teenagers to connect with their spiritual self through his book ? Looking beyond, a teen's guide to the Spiritual World.

Apart from writing best-sellers, James has had other projects in the small screen. His first ever production was a mini-series which was well-received in America and various parts of the world. He also had a talk show for one year which is still run in various countries across the world. He later co-produced one of the greatest prime-time shows starring Jennifer Love Hewitt known as the Ghost Whisperer. His shows have received a lot of acclaim for their help in giving people closure and understanding after the loss of a loved one.

Apart from this, James van Praagh has also traveled the world and taught people how to become more spiritually aware. His books, classes, CDs and seminars have helped people a lot in getting over their loss and coming out stronger. His website provides people with an avenue through which they can share their grief and hopefully and get support and friendship from other grieving individuals. All these projects have been a way for him to share his gift with the world and to turn the tears of grieving individuals into smiles of hope.

BHP delays $20 billion Olympic Dam project as profit slides

MELBOURNE/LONDON (Reuters) - BHP Billiton has shelved its planned $20 billion Olympic Dam expansion in Australia and put all other approvals on hold as the world's largest miner battles escalating development costs, slumping prices and an uncertain outlook.

BHP posted a 35 percent slide in second-half profit and its first fall in annual profit in three years, in the face of falling prices as China's growth cools - wrapping up a sobering earnings season for the world's top producers.

"It's pleasing to see that there's some capital discipline from the company, so they are not ploughing ahead irrespective of current difficult economic conditions," said Tim Schroeders, a portfolio manager at Pengana Capital in Melbourne.

Big miners have all been battered by weaker prices for iron ore, copper, coal, nickel and aluminium as economic growth in big-buyer China slows this year to what is expected to be its weakest pace in more than a decade.

Expanding Olympic Dam, the world's fourth-largest known copper deposit and largest uranium source, was one of three major projects that were due to go to the BHP board for final approval by December 2012 in an $80 billion pipeline of projects that BHP had flagged were likely to be slowed.

On Wednesday, the Anglo-Australian giant said no major new projects would be approved before June 2013.

The move from BHP, though not unexpected, is one of the strongest signals of restraint yet in a mining sector that so far has cut projects and trimmed spending mostly on the fringes.

BHP CEO Marius Kloppers told analysts and reporters the company would take a fresh look at Olympic Dam and consider new technology to improve the economics of the project.

"This about capex escalation," Kloppers said. "This is an escalation driven by a tight labour market, a tight supplier market, a high exchange rate and high diesel prices, which has made a concept that we thought would work, unviable."

BHP said that as a result of the review, it would not be ready to approve an expansion before December 15, 2012, the deadline agreed with the South Australia state government.

Indeed, Kloppers said the miner had written off the study costs of the project altogether, saying BHP was "insufficiently certain" it could devise an economically viable plan at all.

Investors, who have been pressing the major miners to return capital to shareholders rather than splash out on major projects in an uncertain environment, were relieved BHP would hold back on the plan to quadruple copper output from Olympic Dam.

"Cancelling Olympic Dam was probably a good announcement, as the market was looking for something of that nature, or hoping for something like that. So it's a sensible move on their part," said Hayden Bairstow, a Sydney-based analyst at CLSA.

BHP's London shares were down 1.2 percent at 1,957 pence at 1400 GMT, outperforming its peers and the UK mining sector <.ftnmx1770>. Its Australian shares slipped 0.3 percent to close at A$33.16 after the announcement.

"LIVING WITHIN ITS MEANS"

BHP did not cut back on short term spending though - $22.8 billion worth of capital spending over the coming year on projects already approved would go ahead, it said.

The miner, which has publicized a desire to live "within its means", said it would rely on its balance sheet and some asset sales to plug the gap between spending and estimated cash flow.

The expansions underway will boost BHP's production volumes substantially by the end of 2015, including a 50 percent increase in coking coal output, Kloppers said.

But the decision not to approve other major projects this year left open the question of whether BHP will press ahead with its two other mega developments - the Port Hedland Outer Harbour in Australia and the Jansen potash project in Canada.

Kloppers told reporters the company would focus on squeezing as much as it could out of the existing inner harbour iron ore port at Port Hedland - where efficiencies could mean spare capacity in coming years - before pushing on with a new harbour, and remained committed to getting into potash in the long run.

"I don't think BHP has been given a mandate from investors and shareholders to go out and write blank cheques. I think they're very mindful of that and they're bunkering down and responding to the feedback they've been getting," said Peter Esho, chief markets analyst at broker City Index in Sydney.

BHP expects Chinese steel demand growth to slow to a much more modest pace than over the past 10 years, and Kloppers was bearish about a near-term recovery in iron ore prices, languishing at their lowest since December 2009, and coal.

GRAPHIC: BHP profit http://link.reuters.com/zun22t

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^>

BHP's second-half attributable profit before exceptional items fell to $7.16 billion from $10.98 billion a year earlier, as calculated by Reuters from the full-year results, broadly in line with forecasts. Full-year profit to the end of June fell to $17.1 billion from $21.7 billion a year earlier.

BHP has also been hurt by lower natural gas prices and industrial action at its coking coal mines, with its bottom line hit by $2.5 billion in writedowns on its shale gas and nickel assets and charges on projects, including Olympic Dam.

In BHP's biggest business of iron ore, softening demand growth from China has been particularly painful. The world's biggest iron ore miner, Brazil's Vale , last month reported its worst quarterly earnings in two years.

BHP raised its final dividend by 2 cents to 57 cents, but that was below analysts' forecasts of around 58 cents, which was seen as another sign of caution on the outlook.

BHP said earlier this month it would book a $2.8 billion writedown on the U.S. shale business it had bought last year and $450 million on its Australian nickel division, which led Kloppers and petroleum head Mike Yeager to forgo their bonuses.

Kloppers said he saw a recovery in gas prices after a "dramatic" reduction in wells, as players respond to prices hit by unexpected technological improvements and warm weather.

Heritage Oil to fund Nigeria deal by Kurdistan block

(Reuters) - Heritage Oil Plc will sell part of a gas block and borrow money from Genel Energy Plc to raise $450 million, easing concerns about how it will fund oilfield purchases in Nigeria.

Heritage Oil shares jumped 15 percent after the company said it will sell a 26 percent stake in Miran Block in Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region to Genel and will take a $294 million loan from the company.

The cash will partly fund Heritage Oil's acquisition of a stake in Nigeria's OML 30 oilfield assets announced last month.

"Miran sale price is attractive, but the cash is more welcome," BMO Capital Markets' Al Stanton said.

Heritage Oil earlier planned to fund a portion of the OML 30 deal through a rights issue.

"There is no need to proceed with the rights (issue) and any capital raising is dropped," Heritage Oil Chief Financial Officer Paul Atherton told Reuters on Tuesday.

The company will sell the Miran Block stake and an interest in a related joint operating agreement for $156 million, which would increase Genel's holding in the block to 51 percent.

Heritage Oil can repay the loan by transferring ownership of its unit Heritage Energy Middle East Ltd, which currently operates the Miran Block, to Genel.

"After we've completed the acquisition of OML 30 ... either party has the right to exercise this option, and we would expect to complete the same, by way of cancelling the loan in exchange for the remaining rights in Miran," Atherton said.

Heritage Oil, which also operates in Tanzania and Russia, will have no presence in Kurdistan after exiting Miran Block.

Conceptual engineering design studies have focused on the potential for early production of between 80 million and 180 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) at Miran for local markets beginning in 2013 , according to Heritage Oil's website.

This will be followed by an appraisal and full development of between 560 and 750 MMscfd in 2015 for gas export.

Genel's primary assets are oil and gas licences in Kurdistan and has an interest in six production sharing contracts with the Kurdistan Regional Government.

"We aim to build a material gas business alongside our existing oil business in the medium term," Genel Energy Chief Executive Tony Hayward said.

Heritage Oil shares were up 13 percent at 190 pence on the London Stock Exchange at 1004 GMT on Tuesday. Genel's stock was down about 2 percent.

Stop grilling dinner: Specific toxic byproduct of heat-processed food leads to increased body weight and diabetes, mouse study finds

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? Researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine have identified a common compound in the modern diet that could play a major role in the development of abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. The findings are published in the August 20, 2012 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The research team, led by Helen Vlassara, MD, Professor and Director of the Division of Experimental Diabetes and Aging, found that mice with sustained exposure to the compound, methyl-glyoxal (MG), developed significant abdominal weight gain, early insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. MG is a type of advanced glycation endproduct (AGEs), which is produced when food is cooked with dry heat. AGEs have been found to lower the body's protective mechanisms that control inflammation.

In the study, one group of mice was fed a diet high in MG over four generations, while the control group was fed a diet without MG. Both diets had normal calories and fat. Over four generations, the mice that ate the MG started to develop early insulin resistance and increased body fat, whereas the control group did not have either of these conditions. The researchers found that MG caused a marked deficiency in protective mechanisms, such as the survival factor SIRT1 that is present in fat and controls inflammation, while enhancing the metabolism of glucose and insulin. The ingestion of MG also adversely affected the activity of an important anti-AGE receptor called AGER1, which protects SIRT1 and fights insulin resistance.

"This was a prolonged but rewarding study showing that a specific AGE compound abundant in foods, within only a few generations in mouse terms, contributes to the increase in weight gain, insulin resistance, and, diabetes, reproducing the pattern seen increasingly in humans over the last decades ," said Dr. Vlassara. "These key findings should inform how we understand and prevent the human epidemic of obesity and diabetes."

The abdominal fat of the MG-fed mice was transformed into a repository of fat cells producing highly inflammatory molecules called cytokines, which impaired glucose metabolism and slowed down fat turnover, and resulted in insulin resistance and diabetes. Mice that were fed the low-in-MG diet displayed high levels of SIRT1, AGER1 and no diabetes.

"The study demonstrates how the prolonged ingestion of seemingly innocuous substances common in human food, such as MG, can reduce defenses and compromise native resistance to metabolic and other diseases," said Dr. Vlassara. "The mouse findings are also quite exciting because they provide us with new tools, not only to study, but to begin taking measures to prevent diabetes, either by suppressing their formation or by blocking their absorption with our food."

Recent clinical research by Dr. Vlassara's team demonstrated that a modest cut in foods high in AGEs improved insulin resistance in adults with type 2 diabetes, without reducing fat or carbohydrate consumption. In other promising studies, the team has used an oral agent that binds AGEs in the intestine, blocking their absorption.

"For more than 30 years we have been studying the potential of eliminating harmful AGEs from the body, and now from food, as one way to curb the diabetes epidemic," said Dr. Vlassara. "Thus far, our findings reflect the need for a dramatic departure from standard clinical recommendations, which should now include a reduction in the amount of dry heat and processed foods in the diet."

The research team recommends that clinical guidelines be revised to eliminate foods cooked using dry heat and replace them with methods that use lower heat or lots of moisture (water) as in stewing, poaching or steaming. Examples from the AGE-less diet include stewed beef, chicken and fish instead of grilled meats.

UKRAINIANS WILL POSSESS HIGH-SPEED INTERNET IN 2020

100% of Ukrainians will receive high-speed broadband Internet access by 2020 if Universal Service Fund is established, National Committee of Communication Regulation states. Also it is forecasted that 50% of people will be able to buy over the Internet, and 50% ? will have access to e-government services.

Creation of Universal Service Fund which would be filled by the increase of communication service fee is provided in the relevant draft law. As it is explained in the Commission, the Fund will compensate cost of networks building, including broadband connection networks establishment (speed up to 2 Mbit/s) as in the same law it is proposed to add broadband connection to the list of public services. Now the list includes, for example, local telephony, payphones, emergency services, etc.

It is assumed that the Fund will be formed by 3.5% target price premiums on mobile and fixed-line connections and Internet services. At the same time, for mobile connection it is offered to reduce PF tax to 4% (currently it is 7.5%); so that the total amount of fees from services remained unchanged. It is predicted that the amount of the fund in 2013 (in case of adoption of the law) is over $ 1 billion UAH.

LG five million LTE smartphones, plans 'second to none' lineup soon and girds for patent battles

While LG's dollars and cents return on its cellphones have been up and down this year, but the company just announced that since starting the LTE trend with the Revolution in May 2011, it's sold five million high-speed data connected handsets and has no plans to slow down. The counter ticked over three milion back in May, four million in June and, according to LG, sales continued at a pace of one phone every two and a half seconds. That includes two million Optimus LTEs, over 500,000 Optimus Vus and about the same number of Optimus LTE IIs in the first 70 days alone. Now the Korean company is preparing to take its Optimus Vu phablet global, and CEO Dr. Jon-seok Park says its LTE phones in the next few months will be "second to none." with Finally, there's a note possibly intended to ward off the kind of patent trouble currently chasing Samsung, as it's added to an earlier note about the $8 billion value of its LTE patents with another claiming its "largest overall" total number of patents as verified by consulting firm TechIPM. We'll see how well that strategy, and those future phone introductions, work out in the coming months, the rest of the press release is after the break.

Education of Business Online from NCSU Email Marketing Tips ? 3 ...

|

If you are doing any type of business on the internet then you need to be using email marketing in order to rake in the big time profits. If you use the following email marketing tips, you will notice a marked improvement in your results.

Tip #1 ? Build your own, highly targeted email list.

This is a great email marketing tip and you should be spending at least ninety-five per cent of your time building your email list.

The best way to build a responsive email list is to offer a free ebook. Stuff the ebook full of useful and helpful information. Then give it away for free in return for the name and email address of your visitor. A responsive list of people who are interested in hearing from you will boost your profits over the top.

Tip #2 ? Connect on a personal level with your email list. This is crucial to your success and must be taken seriously.

Treat the people on your email list as you would your best friend. Give them useful content. Help to solve their problems. Talk to them and not at them. Write your email message as you do when emailing a friend. Just make your message simple and to the point,

Tip #3 ? Personalize all of your email marketing messages to give your messages a personal feel. Make your email seem as thought it was written for that one reader and not the hundreds or thousands of others on your list.

Try using these email marketing tips in your daily marketing routine and watch your results sky rocket.
